Responders

No More Room in Hell 2 Responders: Professions, Skills & Perks

Your character, their profession, and what carries over when they die. The full profession table lives on the weapons-adjacent pages — this page explains the system.

10Max perk slots
3Active Responder slots
Death is the reset button: a lost Responder takes their levels, perks and loadout with them. What survives is account-level progression and anything unlocked account-wide.

How Responders work

Every new character is randomly generated: a name, a face, and a pre-outbreak profession that decides their starting skill roll. You can keep up to three active Responders and swap between them. Death is permanent — that Responder, their levels, perks and loadout are gone. Account-level progression survives.

Leveling, perks and the cap

The Genesis update (0.8, February 2026) uncapped Responder levels and added extra perk slots at levels 75 and 100, bringing the maximum to 10 perks per Responder. Perks are drawn from your profession's skill pool plus perks unlocked through account progression.

Rerolling a Responder (to chase a better profession) has a cost that Torn Banner has said they continue to tune — check the current build before burning Credits on it.

Best professions by squad role

There's no single best class, but the community-consistent picks per role look like this:

  • Frontline damage: Bear Hunter (Penetrating Shot) and Detective (Headblown) turn rifles and handguns into threat-removers; Hockey Player's Foreman makes kicks deal damage when you're swarmed.
  • Medic: Paramedic (Genes + Stayin' Alive) is the most-recommended healer — pills heal and revives are faster. Nurse (Skilled Medic + Acquired Immunity) is the safer infection-immune variant.
  • Tank / sustain: MMA Fighter (Sturdy Body) and Swim Captain (Thick Skin) are the two survivability picks every "best profession" list names.
  • Loot engine: Prepper (Scavenger) feeds the squad ammo; Courier (Mule) and Quartermaster (Vulture) stretch inventory for long runs.
  • All-rounders for solo queue: Track Star (Athlete) stamina, Police Sniper (Eagle Eye) range, and Sous Chef (Butcher) dismemberment all make you less dependent on the squad.

Since starting skills are a random roll within the profession, treat a good profession roll as a keeper and reroll only when the skill doesn't fit how you play.

Responder questions

What is a Responder?

A Responder is your playable character. Each has a randomly generated name, a pre-outbreak profession, and one or two starting skills tied to that profession.

Do professions matter?

Yes — they decide your starting skill roll. Examples: Swim Captain (Thick Skin, more max health), Track Star (Athlete, more stamina), Paramedic (faster revives), Prepper (Scavenger, more ammo from pickups).

What is the best profession?

There's no single best — it depends on squad role. Commonly recommended picks: Bear Hunter (penetrating heavy shots), Detective (headshot damage), Paramedic (revives and pills), MMA Fighter (damage reduction) and Swim Captain (health).

How many Responders can I have?

You can keep up to three active Responders and swap between them in the character tab.

What happens when a Responder dies?

They're gone permanently — levels, perks and loadout. Account progression is separate and survives.

How do I get more perks?

Responders start with a small perk pool and gain slots by leveling. Genesis (0.8) uncapped levels and added slots at 75 and 100, for a 10-perk maximum.

Can I delete a Responder I don't like?

There's no direct delete option. You can reroll the character roll by spending Credits (community-documented at 50 Credits per reroll), or let the Responder die to free a slot. Torn Banner has floated more slots for the future, but nothing is confirmed.

How do I level up fast?

Collect Supplies, complete main and optional objectives, and extract safely — extracting Supplies is the biggest XP payout, and Credits come mostly from final extraction. Account XP comes from completing objectives, not dying.
