Difficulty
No More Room in Hell 2 Difficulty Levels Explained
Difficulty is where Torn Banner changed the most for 1.0 — the old Casual and Classic names are gone, replaced by Beginner and Normal.
Checked against 1.0 launch coverage · Aug 15, 2026
1.0 also ties firearm ammo spawns to difficulty, so the same gun can feed you differently on Beginner vs Nightmare.
The four tiers
| Tier | Respawn rule | Who it's for |
|---|---|---|
| Beginner | Timed respawns | New players learning the loop |
| Normal | Objective-based respawns | Co-op squads that know the basics |
| Hard | Retuned, more punishing | Experienced groups |
| Nightmare | Retuned, most punishing | Veteran squads chasing a challenge |
The 1.0 rework replaced the old Casual/Classic names with Beginner/Normal. Hard and Nightmare were explicitly retuned to be significantly more challenging, aimed at squads that have outgrown Normal.
Why difficulty affects your loadout math
1.0 ties firearm ammo spawns to difficulty — the same gun can feed you differently on Beginner than on Nightmare. Higher tiers also shift how many zombies a mission throws at you and how fast they pressure objectives. Plan loadouts around the tier, not just the map.
Difficulty questions
How many difficulty levels are there?
Four at 1.0: Beginner, Normal, Hard and Nightmare.
Which difficulty should a new player choose?
Beginner. It was built for onboarding with timed respawns; Normal is where objective-based respawns tighten the co-op loop.
Does difficulty affect loot or ammo?
Yes — 1.0 varies the ammo that firearms spawn with by difficulty.
How do respawns work on Beginner?
Beginner uses timed respawns so players rejoin the action smoothly; Normal switches to objective-based respawns.
Can I change difficulty mid-run?
Difficulty is chosen when setting up the lobby; there's no official mid-run switch.
Are Hard and Nightmare that much harder?
Torn Banner said both were retuned for 1.0 to be significantly more challenging, aimed at experienced squads.
