Treat every bite as a timer that starts immediately — not just the grab minigame. Since update 0.3.1, every zombie attack carries an infection chance.
How infection works
Infection runs in two stages, added officially in the 0.2.1 update:
- Incubation — a short window where you're infected but showing no symptoms.
- Onset — symptoms appear: coughing and HUD warnings, with red veins on screen as you near turning. From here you're racing the timer: find a treatment or turn.
If you turn, your Responder becomes a zombie that can attack your own squad. Infection does not spread to teammates.
How you get infected
Since update 0.3.1, every zombie attack carries a chance to infect — not just the grab minigame. Some zombies release toxic gas when they die, and standing in that gas raises infection risk. Treat every bite, scratch or gas exposure as a potential timer start.
The timer
Community reports describe roughly five minutes from infection to turning, with symptoms restarting after each Phalanx Pill. That figure is community-measured — Torn Banner has not published an official timer value.
Treatments
| Treatment | What it does | Rarity |
|---|---|---|
| Phalanx Pills | Reset the infection timer without curing it; 3 uses per bottle | Semi-common |
| Gene Therapy | The only permanent cure | Extremely rare |
Phalanx Pills are best saved until symptoms appear — resetting early wastes a use. The official 0.2.1 notes described Gene Therapy as a single-use device; 1.0-era guides describe a two-step sequence (draw blood, wait about 30 seconds, inject again). The two-step detail is reported until official 1.0 wording confirms it.
What's unconfirmed
- Extracting while infected: official 1.0 notes don't clearly document the outcome. We don't claim one — verify in the current build.
- Exact timer: ~5 minutes is community-measured, not official.
- Gene Therapy steps: single-use vs two-step — see above.
Infection questions
How does infection work in No More Room in Hell 2?
You get infected, then run through two stages — incubation (no symptoms) and onset (coughing, HUD warnings, red veins as you near turning). Without treatment you turn into a zombie that can attack your own squad.
How do you get infected?
Any zombie attack carries a chance to infect since update 0.3.1, not just the grab minigame. Standing in toxic gas released by some zombies also raises infection risk.
How long is the infection timer?
Community reports describe roughly 5 minutes from infection to turning, with symptoms restarting after each Phalanx Pill. This is community-measured, not an official number.
Do Phalanx Pills cure infection?
No — they reset the infection timer without curing it. Each bottle has 3 uses, so squads typically save them until symptoms appear.
How does Gene Therapy work?
It's the only permanent cure and is extremely rare. The official 0.2.1 notes described a single-use device; 1.0-era guides describe a two-step sequence — draw blood, wait about 30 seconds, then inject again. Treat the two-step detail as reported until the official 1.0 wording is confirmed.
Can infection spread to other players?
No — turning turns your own Responder into a zombie that can attack your squad. Infection does not jump to teammates.
What happens if you extract while infected?
Official 1.0 notes don't clearly document the outcome, so we don't claim one. Verify in the current build before staking a high-level Responder on it.
How do you avoid infection?
Don't get grabbed, keep distance from dying zombies that release toxic gas, and treat every attack as a potential exposure. Pills are a safety net, not a plan.
